THE "IMPARFAIT" TENSE IN FRENCH
🔹 USE: the imparfait tense is used to talk about something from the past, like a habit, something you used to do repeatedly, or to refer to an action that was cut by another, in the past. It can also be used to describe something that started in the past and may be ongoing in the present.
🔹 AFTER SOME EXPRESSIONS, such as "à l'époque; avant; par le passé; quand...", the imparfait is used. This tense is usually used with an undefinite period of time, unlike the passé composé, which is more concrete and defined with dates. With the imparfait, we know it happened in the past but we don't know "when" exactly...
🔹 CONJUGATION : the english equivalent of the imparfait is "was/were +-ing" or "used to + verb". Below, the verb "AVOIR (to have)" conjugated at the Imparfait (take a look at the conjugation endings):
🔸 FORMATION/CONJUGATION OF THE IMPARFAIT🔸
Step 1) You take the present tense of the verb you want. Here, the verb = PARLER (to talk)
Step 2) You take the 3rd person of the plural, "Nous", still at the present tense = NOUS PARLONS (We talk)
Step 3) You keep the prefix of the verb conjugated at the present with "Nous" (you get rid of the ending) = NOUS PARL-
Step 4) You replace with the ending for Imparfait = NOUS PARLIONS (We were talking/We used to talk)
Repeat for every verb. Always take as a base the 3rd person of the plural ("Nous"), at the present tense, to have the prefix of the verb and to conjugate it at the Imparfait.

1️⃣ Quand j'étais petite, je dansais beaucoup dans le salon = When I was a little girl, I was dancing/I used to dance a lot in the living room.
2️⃣ Tu étais très différent, à l'époque = You were very different, at that time.
3️⃣ Nos cousines étaient très belle, le jour du mariage = Our cousins were very beautiful, on the wedding day.
4️⃣ Il y a quelques années, elle apprenait le piano = Some years ago, she was learning piano.
5️⃣ Quand tu agissais comme ça, c'était difficile = When you were acting/used to act like that, it was difficult.
